It's Your Funeral
Paul H Tubb

'Do you have any favourite hymns? '
Maggie asked her other half
'During the wake I'll tell an anecdote,
One that will make everyone laugh.'

'What are you on about? ' replied Tim
Who was Maggie's Boyfriend.
'I'm planning your funeral.' Replied Maggie
'I don't want to leave it all to the end.'

'You're planning my what? ' Tim shouted.
He couldn't believe his ears.
'I'm 23 for God's sake.
I hope to be around for years.'

'Well obviously I hope so to.'
Maggie said trying to keep him calm.
'But being prepared for the worse,
Well it couldn't do any harm.'

'Look at it from my point of view
If you died suddenly one day,
And someone asked what flowers you like,
Well I wouldn't know what to say.'

'People would say I was a bad girlfriend
And I deserved to be on my own,
I'd be accused of not knowing you.
What would you like on your gravestone? '

'I don't want anything thank you! '
Tim shouted, sounding quite upset.
'Not until I'm One hundred and two,
Which is as old as I'd like to get.'

'You plan to get that old? ' Asked Maggie.
'Well that really is a shame.
You see I've written this poem for you.
I'll read it to you just the same.'

'To my Boyfriend Tim,
I'll really miss him.
And now he's gone
Oh well life goes on.'

Tim looked shocked as she read this
And said, 'Is that the best you can do?
If you were to die tomorrow
I'm sure I could write something better for you.'

'What's wrong with it? ' Maggie asked
'It took me ages to write,
I did it whilst you were asleep
It took me all of the night.'

'Well it's a bit basic' Tim replied
'I would have expected a bit more
Would people, who heard this, think I'm a great guy?
I'm really not that sure.'

'Well go on then' Said Maggie
Write me an Epitaph
And come up with a story for the wake,
That would make everybody laugh.'

Tim stood up and he said, 'OK.'
And grabbed some paper and a pen.
And after a bit he handed them back
And said, 'What do you think of that then? '

'It's terrible! ' said Maggie
'It doesn't even mention my name.
'Well if we split up' Tim replied 'And I find someone new'
'I'd like to keep it the same.'

Well Tim and Maggie stayed together
But their wills they both did change
'After I've gone' Each one said
'My Funeral they can't arrange.'
